"Jesus take the wheel"

I try really hard to be tolerant and take all forms of religious expression in the spirit in which they were intended, but, between you and me, isn't Carrie Underwood's song Jesus, Take the Wheel the DUMBEST thing you've ever heard?

TheCSO and I can usually let odd Christian things go without snarky comment, but last time we were in the car and it came on the radio, when the girl's car is spinning on the ice and she throws her hands up in the air, we both burst out laughing. It reminds me of that really funny urban legend about the lady who throws herself out of her car's sunroof trying to join the rapture.

And I'm sorry, the song opens up a whole territory for "But officer, *I* wasn't going 80 in a 35! *Jesus* was driving!" humor that is just wrong.

Ps. Oh and, for what it's worth...

You are making that up, right? There really is not a song by that name or about that topic. There simply can't be.

Hey, don't take it on my word, read the lyrics yourself.

I was cruising around i-tunes last night and saw the title, which immediately caused me to roll my eyes. But leave it to CC to link me to the actual lyrics, which are even more hatrocious than my imagination could concoct.

What Crrrrrrrrrrrap!

This story ine is one of the oldest in Christendom, with probably the most famous use being "God is my co-pilot". I heard the story from an old-timer at an airshow in a slightly different form. The raconteur was an carrier-based fighter pilot in WWII, and he told it this way: So there I was on final approach, the flames licking the cockpit making it unbearably hot. I was losing a lot of blood, and was losing conciousness. I took my hands off the stick and said "It's your plane now, God." And you know what? God crashed it! Hit the island and bounced into a parked airplane!

i pity you guys. you have lost everything you have that you envy even those who have it. i will not pray for you because you don't believe in it. i just hope that one day you may realize what you're missing. i wouldn't be surprised that you're the one crying out loud asking whoever you believe in to take the wheel from you life.

until then....

you believe what you sayin' here? come on. if you don't believe in anything why do you have to bash other people's faith? pathetic!

I respect your opinion but I must insist that you look at the lyrics once again. Please do not take the words literally because there is a more deeper meaning that the words alone can't express.

If you would look beyond the lyrics, the song is giving an example of someone losing faith and hope, someone who is losing her way. She was about to die when God gave her a second chance to change her ruined life. God did not literally took the wheels but made her realize her mistakes for her baby's and her sake.

The song is beautiful and only Christians can truly understand its essence. Anyone can actually get to appreciate it if you allow your self to open your mind and heart to things.

What is essential, is invisible to the naked eye.

Christian ideas and topics are not always meant to be taken literally, nor are they always figurative. You are showing your ignorance by making fun of something that you clearly do not understand.

This song is somewhat of an allegory. Imagine your car as your life, and the many twists and turns of the road are the various paths you could take. When you attempt to control your life when things are going badly for you (or when you attempt to control your car when you are spinning on the ice), it's impossible. If you let Jesus handle the problems in your life, and trust what He does and in His word (the Bible), things will be a lot smoother for you. It's a little like having a roadmap that tells you how to avoid the hazards of the road (life). It will tell you when there are accidents, frozen roadways, and heavy traffic, just as God and the Bible can tell you how to avoid or deal with deaths, difficult relationships, and general life issues.

I hope I have helped enlighten you, and maybe you will try to think more about the deeper implications of a song.

You know, just because I don’t like the song doesn’t mean I don’t understand it. The message is exactly the same as that of another song, Amazing Grace.

Yes, the woman once was lost and now she’s found, was blind but now she sees.

Amazing Grace is beautiful and powerful in its simplicity. The author of Amazing Grace didn’t have to resort to a ridiculous metaphor to make his point. Carrie Underwood did.

I’m not insulting y’alls faith. I’m saying it deserves better than a syrupy, crappy song like that one.

Leave people's faith alone. If you dont believe, then back off. Let those who understand the true meaning of the song enjoy everymoment they spend listening to the inspirational song. SO FAR ITS THE BEST. GO CARRIE!!!!!

May 15, 2006 My daughter was in an automobile accident which ended in her death. I would only pray that in that scary moment right before that tractor trailer hit her that she asked Jesus to take the wheel, that her faith in him prevailed over her fear!! I pity those that can not understand the power of prayer!

Here in Canada we don't believe in the Jesus that Americans have created (The one who takes the wheel)

It seems that Americans are creating a God in Jesus, and want and ask him to take responsibility for our shortcomings. (Being poor drivers, for example.) The song "Jesus take the Wheel" is an example of how we do not want to exercise any responsibility for our own shortcomings.

Some people will die when they hit the black ice of the song. Some will not. Jesus has nothing to do with it. Luck is what it is.

The song is rather pathetic--Xmas eve, single mother going home to see Mom and Dad, not much money, running out of gas, and ...who knows what else.

Surely, if Jesus had any self-respect he would not be involved with this piece of doggeral designed to appeal to the masses that will make the singer bushels of money.

This is my very first visit to a blog site and I am really surprised. No matter where you go in life or what the subject it, people have different opinions and perspectives.

My perspective is that of a mother of five. I am giving my all everyday to nurture, train, and love my kids. Parents have a real struggle against the desire to control their children. Trying to control another human is the most useless fight on earth. But when you are trying to help your kids grow into the best they can be, and feel like they just do not get it, throwing your hands in the air is a common response. That is the point where a mother's prayer is like that of the driver in Carrie's song. That is where faith takes over and we admit we do not have control so that the One who does can work His mysterious ways. Of course, a person who has not put their trust in the one true God would find that silly.

The first time I sang this song Karaoke I was amazed at how natural it felt. Because I understood the meaning and sang it from the heart!

Perhaps you don't understand what it means to be a Christian, and what the Bible teaches us. Not many people would let go of the wheel while driving, and I doubt this is what the songwriter was intending in his message... oh, they do send messages to people through song... even rock 'n roll... which I'm a big fan of. Throwing up your hands and asking Jesus to take the wheel is just another way of saying, please Jesus, take control of my life, because I'm not doing such a great job, and the Bible teaches us to put our faith and trust in YOU. Ever tried to make something happen so hard and only come up against a brick wall? Then for some unexplained reason, things may not have turned out like you planned, but they turned out right? Well stop beating the brick wall, and let those who are Christians and believe in letting Jesus take the wheel of our lives just do it. Please don't sensure us, or those of us who have a poetic way of putting it!

You guys just don't get it do you? Jesus Take The Wheel is about a woman giving Jesus her life and letting Him take control over her. If you actually look at it that way, it makes more sense. But you should keep your big mouths shut because other people will think the way you do and it isn't fair when they lose faith and love for Jesus all because of you. So back off, ok? People beleive in the song and it's message from Carrie to all of us. She made it because she is a Christian and handed her life over to Jesus. Stop all this critisizing to and about the song, it isn't right. You only make a fool of yourselves when you do and say things like that. You need to learn, and except it. I am for one a lover of Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thanx for all this and I will be sure to come and see what more things you say that I can fight with you about. BYE!!!

this is just retarded if you Judge the way people express there faith then you will also be judged, seriously you just need to grow up! I am going to pray for you, because it is the Christianly thing to do.

OMG, I totaly agree, this song is so stupid and has been the butt of more than a few jokes between me and my friends.

To all those Mega-Christians out there, why do you think you are the only ones who can understand a metaphor. Seriously, they are not that hard, and as metaphors go, this one is pretty simple. Calm down, you guys make the exact same kind of hate posts about Atheist topics.

All this song is, is a disgusting attempt by a second-rate
singer to make money off of someone else's story by cramming Jesus into it.

Yay civility, proven science, and open- mindedness, boo Carrie Underwood and hate comments.

Okay, so apparently you have no idea on what this song really means. The whole care situation is just a metaphor to what life really is. It's actually saying that we can go through hard situations in our life, and if we surrendar our lives to God; then he will take fuil control of our lives and he will always be here for us if we just put our understandings down and listen to him.
Stop dissing religions man. Its a free country. God is the right way to go. He died for your sins and the least you can do is give him your life.

Note my comparison of the song to "Amazing Grace" indicates that I do understand that the song expresses the themes you list. I just think the song expresses them laughably poorly.

Also, do you seriously have nothing better to do than respond to five-year-old blog posts? Seriously?
