Something else to be depressed about

We undeniable still have a justice system that does not provide justice for all as provided by the Pledge of Allegiance. One justice for the rich, one justice for the poor. One justice sometimes for minorities, one for whites.

From a speech Harriet Miers gave ten years ago.

Yes, kids, a lady who thought the pledge of allegiance provides justice ten years ago is about to get on the Goddamned Supreme Court.

I'd have some scotch and go to bed, but Kaiser's website says booze will aggravate my headaches.

No justice system is perfect even our own,but our The USA) justice system is about as good as there is if you take a world view of justice systems.

Death penalty aside, I tend to agree.

I had to read that quote twice before I saw what you were talking about. The first time, my mind just skipped over the word choice and got exactly what she was trying to say.

Yes, it would have been better if she'd said "as promised by" instead of "as provided by". Big deal.

I have plenty of other reasons to not want Miers on the Supreme Court. But suboptimal word choice in a speech given ten years ago doesn't even make the list.

If I wanted to go the subliminal route, there's probably much to be said about the subconscious assumption that to pledge allegiance to the flag is to have justice assured to one.

But I'd rather worry about the fact that she's a sloppy thinker.
