How many Southern Presbyterians does it take to change a light bulb?

For a variety of reasons relating to a new thing that might be happening in my life*, I might be shutting down the Chaliceblog fairly soon. If I shut down the Chaliceblog, I'm going to disappear from the blogosphere for awhile because I think that's the only way I can deal and I don't want to hang around your blogs like the retired coworker whom nobody wants to eat lunch with. I will still be available over facebook and e-mail and would love to hear from you because like any retired coworker I know I will be lonely. I will probably go back to commenting when I've gotten some distance.

I tested my resolve on this tonight by deleting 20 posts (some that I very much liked and a couple that had taken hours to write) at the request of someone else because that person convinced me it was the right thing to do. It hurt like hell, but I did it. I now know I can do it again.

In reality, the Chaliceblog's days were numbered the day I got into law school.

Mary-who-dances, after having been fired by a prebyterian church because she is a lesbian, once said to me "Not every change is a fabulous new opportunity, some of them just suck"

This change would be both. It would have wonderful aspects, but I would certainly mourn this blog. And it may not work out and a few weeks from now, I may pull a Nirvana and say "Nevermind" and delete this and go on, but I really care about you guys and didn't want to just disappear with no warning. That said, if I decide to do this, I'm going to move quickly.

So there you go.

CC
who is going to take the opportunity to tell the UUA Washington Office that one of your number told somebody that the Chaliceblog drives y'all crazy and told that person not to tell me because it would give me too much satisfaction.

That person did tell me, and it was indeed immensely gratifying. Thinking about that makes a very sad person very happy.

* No, I'm not knocked up, and yes, theCSO and I are still very much married.

The UU blogosphere will seem hollow to me without you.

CC,

Here's a UU blog trivia data point for you.

Yours in the only UU-themed blog hosted on blogger.com that isn't blocked on my Air Force computer at work (this isn't my doing - my own blog is blocked at work - apparently someone at the Pentagon or Air Combat Command HQ likes your blog).

"Philocrites" was blocked for a while but is now unblocked at work.

However, "Boy in the Bands" and "Surving the Workday" are both blocked at work.

Good luck,
Steve

say what??? does this mean I have to watch local TV to find out what is going on up at St. Andrews???
seriously, a person's got to do, but all i can say is "Bummer, man" bummer" (knowing how much you love hippie talk) .....

Have you ever considered that it could be a religious duty for you to leave the blog up, at least, even if you don't blog on it regularly? Like an important archive of UU history or something? I don't want to be the mean one to pressure you not to do this, since you have a thing, but I feel like it might be important just to nudge you a little and say what a great loss this would be and that maybe you should reconsider? I wish to be more forceful, but I figure you have your reasons. But really, do consider the importance of this blog for Unitarian Universalism... we need a range of voices out there. Yours is such a good one...

Well, I know I'm not part of your entourage, UU or otherwise, but I like your blog. I find it intelligent, thought provoking and funny. That being said, I understand you have personal reasons for taking it down. You gotta do what you gotta do. But I will also miss you if you go.

While I understand the need for change, I will sorely miss your blog. I don't always agree with you, but that's a good thing. It is always thought provoking and well written.

Based on my experience in South Carolina, it takes a lot a Southern Christians to change
a light-bulb, and some of them would rather remain in the dark, perhaps partly from being amazingly ignorant about historical Christianity (like UUS, on the whole). In Columbia after 9-11, when a number of (mostly oddball, like UUs, Jews, Bahais, Muslims) groups worked together to head off anti-Muslim violence before the mosques were burned down, the main-line Christians (actually, Christians of about any stripe) were notably absent from that ecumenical effort.
I hope that your warning
about closing the Chalice Blog is a false alarm, although I am well aware of the strains of law school.

We UUs are supposed to be more aware than the average religious zealot that the only constant is change, but that doesn't mean we have to like it.

Your absence will be a big loss...no other UU blog quite like yours.

CC,

You don't know me. I have never left a comment on your blog before. I started reading you a few years back on BeliefNet and have followed The Chaliceblog, albeit sporadically, since you began it. I have enjoyed it tremendously and I selfishly admit I will miss it. That being said, though, you gotta do what you gotta do, and this Anonymous reader in the wilds of the Oklahoma-Texas borderlands wishes you well!

¡Hasta la vista!

You will be missed, if you do in fact stop blogging.

Are you okay? Is there anything we can do to help?
Yours is the second blog I check every evening, and the first one just disappeared tonight. but it was getting pretty dead so I expected it. This wasn't really expected, though the law school thing should have been obvious.
If you do quit, let me know when you start up again. I'm not good enough at this to find you myself. :-)

What Elizabeth said. No more Chaliceblog would be a huge loss for the UU blogosophere. We need your voice!

Gosh, CC, I hope you figure out a way to stay in the conversations. You've become an important fixture and there will be a big hole in the UU blogosphere if/when you leave it. I like the idea of your leaving it up, even if you can't contribute regularly. And believe me, I do understand about the workload of grad school. Law school must be an even bigger load.

If you do go, we'll be standing on the figurative porch calling "CC, come back" as you ride off into the sunset.

I just want to go on record as saying that I hope you don't shut down your blog, even if you feel you must take a hiatus. I would miss you, an important voice in the UU world. I'm still hoping that you'll reconsider while at the same time understanding the pressures of life and law school.

CC,

This is my favorite UU blog. If you must go, you'll be missed.
