It suddenly occurred to me that I needed to clarify the comment above in light of what Louis Farrakhan said- when I wrote "messiah", I wasn't refferring to Senator Obama.

Notice that it uses the very important constants e, pi, i, 1, and 0 each exactly once, together with the important concepts = and +.
Joe, I'm a little confused. Is that equation "remarkable" because it is a cool curiosity, using all those constants, sort of a more sophisticated math version of "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" or does that equation have some cool application?
CC, it is usually considered remarkable because it is a cool curiosity...at least, for sufficiently nerdy values of "cool." Some regard the relating of so many basic constants in such an elegant way as having an almost mystical significance.

Joe's Eulerian equation is indeed cool and famous. But I do not think that it is really as much fun as Euler's gamma function, which is a generalization of its well-known special case as a factorial, e.g. 3! = 3 x 2 x 1 = 6 The idea that you can extend such a relationship to a number such as pi (3.14159 . . . ), which goes on forever, is more than interesting. Once I wrote a short story about what else Euler was doing then in St. Petersburg, when he was working on the gamma function. (It has to do with the daughter of a certain art teacher.)
Had interesting thoughts while sitting through Yom Kippur yesterday. Most of them involved my own personal fulfillment through worship and how sitting in a pew for six hours reading from a prayer book isn't it.
But the more interesting ideas pertained to how various Great Awakenings fit into Generational Cycle theory. It looks like we're moving toward increased secularism, as we move away from the 1970-ish spiritual era. The next burgeoning period of religious sentiment will be when the next baby boomer generation comes of age in the 2040s, in the aftermath of the 2020s cataclysm.
