I have a complicated relationship with the idea of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I will likely go into why pretty soon, but today it would be upsporting of me not to mention it's his birthday.
CC: Well, you still have not read John Dickson Carr's bio. of Doyle, and there are a couple of more recent ones. He was a physician who supported the Boer War, which was not one of Great Britain's prouder moments, and also a spiritualist. Sherlock did better, but perhaps because he was modelled partly on an Edinburgh surgeon/ neuroanatomist, Dr. Charles Bell. Now back to writing about another(real)physician, Avicenna. LinguistFriend
