Does everybody let their kids watch a whole ton of TV?

My coworkers were talking this morning about using TV to help the baby get back to sleep.

Now, I'm not one for thinking that TV destroys kids' brains or anything. After all, I saw every Three's Company ever made about five times when I was a kid and I'd still put my critical thinking skills up against just about anyone else's.

But I don't quite know what to do with the idea that one of my coworkers has a daughter who will wake up in the middle of the night and cry until she's allowed to watch TV to get her back to sleep.

Though come to think of it, if I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't watch TV until I fell asleep again, I might cry, too.

Hmm -- it's never occurred to me to watch TV to fall back asleep, perhaps because I've always lived with other people and never had a TV in my own room, so I'd worry that having it on would disrupt the sleep of others. Has this mom of your acquaintance considered teaching her kid to read?

The only time I've ever had a tv in the room where I slept was when I rented an attic space in an old house.

If I wake up in the middle of night (rare, rare occurrence), I'm more likely to go check my email.
