I probably should have written "ridden the rods" instead of "ridden the rails." Both are old hobo-ese for catching a free ride on a freight train. The rods were support brackets underneath the box car between the wheels--the most dangerous and difficult spot to ride. I didn't do that--the rods had shrunk to unridable size by my time--but the term remained in use. Related terms: "riding blind baggage" (the space between the baggage car and passenger cars) and "side-door Pullman" (an open, empty box car, every tramp's favorite, warmest, and safest ride.)
