Oh, I hope we all celebrate "Loving Day" on June 12. What a fortuitous name for a courageous couple.
But the mention of Richard Loving having been 17 when he started courting an 11 year old Mildred was a bit creepy.
Such laws were actively enforced. I recall the interracial marriage of the son of a Unitarian professor in my VA home town. Living out of VA, when they came to visit his parents, they routinely did not dare to enter VA in a car until after dark. When I visited VA with my adopted infant black son (quite visible in his car-seat), on several occasions we were followed by police, presumably on suspicion that the child was proof of miscegenation.
