Lying-in-cat-pee-friendship

Jana-who-creates has been at the beach for like a week, and will remain there for several more weeks.

And I totally miss her. (FWIW, I also miss Zombie Kid and TheGnome. I have to put together a big package for TheGnome's 7th birthday, which is two weeks away. SmileyDave remains in town and theCSO and I have invited him over for a beer, but he has been sick.)

Anyway, I hadn't had a chance to call JwC until tonight. And pretty much the moment someone picked up the phone on the other end, I sat in cat pee. Like, one of the cats had peed the lovesac as a protest to some percieved injustice.

But the thing is, I really wanted to talk to my friend, and it was getting late already since she couldn't talk until ZombieKid and TheGnome were asleep. And tomorrow is Friday and TheCSO and I might go do something, and Saturdays are always a bitch to plan...

So I wiped the cat pee off of the lovesac and sat down on the floor, still rather fragrant. And then my friend started talking about minigolfing with the kids and I started talking about how restless I've been feeling and the world pretty much washed away on a tide of talk about our wacky relatives and plans to attend the Ren Faire together en masse and whether her enthusiasm made CC a Ren Faire geek.

And an hour later, we were giggling and talking about secret worries and I was offering her a job that doesn't exist yet in a law firm that hasn't heard of me and we were both getting tired and I realized I still stank.

Like, seriously.

We rang off and I got the lysol and the febreze, all the while thinking that there were few people in this world whom I would sit around smelling like cat pee to talk to just because I hadn't had the chance to hear that voice in awhile and I missed it.

May all your friendships, be cat pee friendships.

Now I'm off to take a shower...

How do you know that your cat wasn't protesting against a real injustice of some sort CC? I really don't like that term "perceived injustice" very much because it definitely minimizes actual injustices. . .

To me, all the words "percieved injustice" mean is that there is disagreement over what qualifies as an injustice. I can certainly agree that rational people can have very different views of what justice looks like when the death penalty is involved, for example.

(Is execution of a poor kid from the streets who grew up around crime and never really saw that he could do any better an injustice?

Is letting that kid live when he killed an old lady beloved by her grandchildren during a mugging an injustice to the woman's surviving family and to anyone that kid might kill in the future?)

I used the phrase "percieved injustice" in this case because I don't know what real injustice these cats could have faced in my house. They are fed a balanced diet with occaisional treats, allowed to go outside when they want, they had gotten a clean litter box Wednesday and they have an excellent veterinarian when they need one.

If that hypothetical kid from the streets had the advantages our cats have, he might grow up to be a CPA.

When our cats are angry with us, it is over some minor thing like we bathed them (cats hate water, but our long-hair starts to stink if she doesn't get bathed) or perhaps that Cool Disco Dan got the coveted spot in the bed next to theCSO that Esperanto wanted or something that might only be conceivable as an injustice to feline eyes.

Loved the post, CC, and I'd probably do the same thing. My cats get a bit pissed (no pun intended) when they can't go out on the deck or I've been gone for a long time, but so far they haven't done anything but barf (which I hear Loosy doing right now). Rats! Don't know what perceived injustice has been perpetrated upon them----it's too early in the morning. Oh, wait, it's raining this morning and the deck is wet. Sometimes perceived injustice has nothing to do with my behavior, that's right!

Wow, that is right up there with stepping in a slimy furball with barefeet! Try some "Simple Solution" -- it works well. Good luck! Love your blog...

CC, I am not a cat person, but I read your description of friendship and thought, "Yes!!" Spot on, to go all British on you. (I can *write* it; I just can't *say* it.)

I didn't know you were a Ren Faire geek! You know they started with The Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California? (northern and southern -- ours was actually second, but I went every year for the first 30-something years.)
