This actually happened a couple of months ago and I've been meaning to write about it, but I kept forgetting. Luckily, a reader reminded me by posting the following comment on my old Jesus, take the wheel post.
just for your information...i think that song and carrie underwood are great i think you might just be jealous because you arent as good as her and the people on here who think that song is dumb and laugh at it? GO FUCK YOURSELF FOR ME OK? THANKS!!
(For new readers, the post where I make fun of "Jesus, take the wheel" got a lot of mail like that. I'm no fan of hippies, but I've got to admit that the people who wrote to defend "Imagine," another song I dislike and made fun of in a post, were far more literate and reasonable.)
So anyway, TheCSO and I were watching Saturday Night Live. We normally ignore the musical guests completely and fast-forward through their stuff, but we started talking and weren't paying attention. All of the sudden this blonde singer took the stage and started singing a slightly dark and creepy song, a little bit sexy, a little bit crazy, about destroying her boyfriend's car because he was cheating on her.
That singer was Carrie Underwood, and that song was "Before he cheats."
And it rocked.
So anyway, we're not running out to buy concert tickets or anything, but I did want to acknowledge that she has done a song I really like.

Bwahaha! I missed the original "Jesus Take the Wheel" post and had to go read it. I am continually amazed at the religious accord given to pop songs. Not religious, but similar, is Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American," which I hate. Yet folks treat it like it's the US Anthem. I think a year ago there was actually a reported incident in which someone at a ball game didn't stand up for it, and was beaten up.
Topping "Take the Wheel" though, is "Christmas Shoes," which gets heavy airplay, at least in the South, during December. YE GODS! Get that child in an RE class so that he doesn't think Jesus judges someone based on their shoes!
"Before He Cheats" is kind of the anti-"Jesus Take the Wheel." I find the latter silly in its attempts at metaphor, but it comes off as sincere. "Before He Cheats" rocks but has a nasty edge. I can't help thinking that a guy who sang that song about a woman would be considered a mild psychopath.
Oh, I absolutely think that Underwood comes off as a mild psychopath.
Actually, when I look at the lyics alone it makes me think about the urban legend of a man who thinks his wife is cheating because of the mysterious sportscar in the driveway, destroys the car, then finds out that the innocent wife had bought the sports car as a surprise for him.
But somehow, I find craziness a lot easier to take than earnestness.
