A side-issue, not entirely irrelevant: the number of people killed by Hitler is appalling, no matter how one considers it. The last time I made an estimate on the basis of available statistics, it came to about 75 million dead in WW II. When I studied modern Russian history in college, the number of Russians alone killed by Hitler was estimated at about 20 million. More recent estimates are closer to 30 million Russians. The issue about the Holocaust is different; it is rather an estimate of the degree of success of Hitler's attempt to exterminate a people who have made great contributions to western civilization. If it must be quantified, it should be considered in terms of the proportion of that people whom Hitler reached, not in terms of an absolute number.
Because of a recent ton of spam and weird insulting comments from a brand-new poster, I'm putting in comment moderation for a bit. I'm planning to do comment moderation "Ms. Kitty Style," as in, with a very light touch and kicking only off-topic and unreasonably insulting posts.

ReplyDeleteOff topic, but: I'm sure it will turn out that these gun sellers were just messing with the folks to whom they were selling guns.
ReplyDeleteYES! I couldn't stand W and I don't think he is a "good" man, but the Hitler name-calling was ridiculous then and it's ridiculous now.
ReplyDeleteWhat, we'd actually have some restraint? Surely you jest.
