Or you disingenuously sidestepped my points. . . Did you even bother to follow the links? My point was that even if GBLT people are completely "love-bombed" by a U*U Welcoming Congregation because they are gay they can, and in some cases do, discover that they are "less than welcome" and even outright unwelcome because they are Christian oriented or otherwise theistic and/or are political conservatives such as "Log Cabin Republicans" for example.Robin Edgarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06208142626285495635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-42401218754050536792009-01-28T19:32:00.000-05:002009-01-28T19:32:00.000-05:00"Why is it UUs do not typically use nasty ethic (s..."Why is it UUs do not typically use nasty ethic (sic) stereotypes, but make an exception for the term WASP?"

Well Dudley, *I* personally get a kick out of describing egotistically delusional aka self-important 97% White U*Us as WASU*Us myselves. :-)Robin Edgarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06208142626285495635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-79222136000494913062009-01-27T12:12:00.000-05:002009-01-27T12:12:00.000-05:00I think because most people regard it as a discrip...I think because most people regard it as a discriptive term rather than a pejorative one.

CCChalicechickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07781469958573869914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-5306117656515009722009-01-27T12:03:00.000-05:002009-01-27T12:03:00.000-05:00"I wonder if that question isn't just a fancy way ..."I wonder if that question isn't just a fancy way of asking, "How are you not a WASP?""

Why is it UUs do not typically use nasty ethic stereotypes, but make an exception for the term WASP?

Do you think throwing words like that at people makes good karma?

Dudley Jones
jonesdudley@hotmail.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-66777895100468802512009-01-26T23:21:00.000-05:002009-01-26T23:21:00.000-05:00"Particularly given the number of gay folks who fi..."Particularly given the number of gay folks who find the "welcoming congregation" stuff annoying and insulting, and I would think that would be easier."

Especially when they discover to their chagrin that, for one reason or another, they aren't *really* welcome in *some* U*U "Welcoming Congregations". . .Robin Edgarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06208142626285495635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-67560286798650777622009-01-25T04:42:00.000-05:002009-01-25T04:42:00.000-05:00As an Englishman living in Italy, I tend to coales...As an Englishman living in Italy, I tend to coalesce with other "Anglos".

I think the British tend to view Americans as simply British people with different accents, while the Americans tend to view the British as no different to any other foreigner.

Oscar Wilde remarked that the two cultures were of course separated by a common language, and this does illustrate the gulf.

However, while I think the British tend to delude themselves about the Americans, I think the Americans tend to delude themselves about themselves!

Although there are differences - as there are between all of the Anglo cultures - these are less pronounced than between others. But i suppose it was important for Americans to fashion out a separate identity after independence.

Equally of course, the same applies to the English - and Europe!uni-talianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12130575625229865792noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-60341035827006220722009-01-25T01:50:00.000-05:002009-01-25T01:50:00.000-05:00CC-- I added that book to my wish list. He HATES that, and feels particularly annoyed because we're not living in Hyderabad (where it might be reasonable to ask him to adapt to general local norms of cuisine and language, as he did when he lived in Japan), but in the U.S.PGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09381347581328622706noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-15991133321205858582009-01-23T19:32:00.000-05:002009-01-23T19:32:00.000-05:00interesting topic. I have been thinking about wri...interesting topic. I have been thinking about writing a sermon on "real diversity" -- like the kind of stuff that makes us uncomfortable with people of other cultures, or even subcultures. Like the kinds of things addressed in Deborah Tannen's books That's Not What I Meant and You Just Don't Understand, as well as things like the distance we stand from each other when we speak to each other.
I watch my stepsons' other mother, with her wealthy eastern seaboard upbringing, complaining about the way the elder son's "working class" girlfriend dresses -- she calls it trashy. I see this as a culture clash. (as I see it, it isn't what she wears, it's when she wears it.)
There are a lot of clashes -- and most people aren't aware that other people have a different view from them -- they assume people are just being annoying on purpose. I'm thinking of a receptionist in an office I worked in who frequently complained about the boss's very Japanese wife. When I said that maybe, since she was raised in a different culture, what she said that you think is rude, wouldn't have been rude in her culture, so she doesn't know. The reply I got from her was, "Well, she's in America now, so she should act like an American!"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-66994195664607038482009-01-23T18:22:00.000-05:002009-01-23T18:22:00.000-05:00After years of advanced study of other cultures, I...After years of advanced study of other cultures, I abandoned the quest for understanding them, for fear it would limit my already pressured understanding of myself.

So what do I do with other cultures?
