But then, most of the Christians I know don't seem to know much about historical Christianity of any sort either, although they know and value their rituals.LinguistFriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02695715246663202212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-27167842713159958832007-12-15T14:39:00.000-05:002007-12-15T14:39:00.000-05:00Judging by the places I've lived Liberal Christian...Judging by the places I've lived Liberal Christianity and UUism tend to flourish when both options are available, and they tend to wither in the same places as well. I don't think UUism would be hurt by greater knowledge of liberal Christianity.

CCChalicechickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07781469958573869914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-89303782741573876042007-12-14T15:42:00.000-05:002007-12-14T15:42:00.000-05:00CC, you are considering those mainline Protestants...CC, you are considering those mainline Protestants who are urban and religiously sophisticated. Here I encounter many people who have had collisions with small-town mainline Protestant pastors who are not that broad minded, and are unaware of their options. In this book, Borg is writing to keep those people within the general Christian direction. A small number of them turn up at UU groups, some of them go to the nondenominational groups, others just drop out.LinguistFriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02695715246663202212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-73947444045194205602007-12-14T13:49:00.000-05:002007-12-14T13:49:00.000-05:00Mark, I have been reading Borg for much of the las...Mark, I have been reading Borg for much of the last decade. I suspect that if more mainline Protestants read "The Heart of Christianity", for instance, so that they could recognize that there are more options of belief within Christianity than they thought, there would be fewer UUs. I've never had the opportunity to see how Borg would work with young people, which I think could be
very productive.
Kim, Spong did not seem optimistic that his ideas about Christianity were likely to mesh with the church organization. In my own youth, the main religious contact was that our family went to the Jewish Community Center for cultural events, so I do not share the pain of those many UUS who have left Christianity, although I have learned about it in the course a lot of time spent in membership work, and in scholarly work on Christian texts. But I like Heschel, for instance, as well as Bonhoeffer.LinguistFriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02695715246663202212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-46434468994079144532007-12-14T13:14:00.000-05:002007-12-14T13:14:00.000-05:00It's nice that there's always someone who is tryin...It's nice that there's always someone who is trying to bring the church back to being Christian. The main thing will be to find time to read and absorb them.
H Sofia, sometimes writing such a synopsis is a useful way to make sure that one has caught the material on the fly, when one tries to pull a logical structure out of one's notes. It helps to be prepared, as I could be in this case, so that one can see logical gaps. Probably there was not a lot in the lecture material that was new to people like you who have been following Spong longer than I have.
