I think part of the reason I went to grad school was to get my access back.

Slate did a review of hard copy dictionariesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-1153013336679012502006-07-15T21:28:00.000-04:002006-07-15T21:28:00.000-04:00I've got the Big Dog (2nd Ed.), the American Herit...I've got the Big Dog (2nd Ed.), the American Heritage (which seems to share much material with the Big Dog), a couple of editions of Webster's New Collegiate, and a Funk & Wagnall's Standard College. (Who remembers the stock gag line from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In?) Would love to get a Shorter OED sometime.faustohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08858053354116695746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-1152983351983992992006-07-15T13:09:00.000-04:002006-07-15T13:09:00.000-04:00OK, I will make those changes. Ooops.

Of course people don't need to take my list shopping. They can pick which dictionary they want and click on the title and the link will take them to a page that will sell it to them.

CCChalicechickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07781469958573869914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-1152983054209196702006-07-15T13:04:00.000-04:002006-07-15T13:04:00.000-04:00In the American Heritage dictionary, you will find...In the American Heritage dictionary, you will find my friend Rima's name as being the pronounciation editor.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9864334.post-1152978606887629742006-07-15T11:50:00.000-04:002006-07-15T11:50:00.000-04:00CC: The second edition of the OED contains twen...CC:
The second edition of the OED contains twenty volumes (not seventeen), with four supplementary volumes available at last count. The second edition was assembled by combining the material of the first edition and
the earlier four supplementary volumes (1972-1986), with minor typographic and transcriptional changes. I have both in reduced format, saving at least a thousand dollars on the full second edition, even when the OED is on sale at OUP.
You confused the NCD and the ACD. The ACD is still worth using.
I keep a copy by the computer at which I am writing.
You don't need to know Greek or even the Greek alphabet to use the OED.
"touted", not "toted", towards the end.
The blogger version is fun, but don't forget to take the real one along when you go shopping.
You don't need to leave this note up, but you may want to make the corrections.
LinguistFriendLinguistFriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02695715246663202212noreply@blogger.com
